Before the American Civil War there was slavery. Of mostly blacks from Africa but some Native Americans too. It was easier for Native Americans to escape by knowing the land and maybe what to forage. But the blacks being brought from Africa with no native tongue to the Americas and no knowledge of terrain or plant life--they didn't have much confidence. Until word of the Underground Railroad came along! Certain peoples in the white society were sympathetic to the blacks and helped them to freedom--the North! They did this by signs and symbols in everyday objects; like the quilts with symbolism the hung along fence lines...
