You walk on by
You lie and say you don't have any money
You think they are at fault of their situation
You see a person hurting but you don't ask any questions
How do I know? I have been there too.
Compassion. Compassion. Comes from the heart. But it also can be a learned behavior--and one that is reinforced. When you give a homeless person the coffee in your hand or your lunch for the day--you'll mostly get tears and gratefulness. (And a few rejections because they don't trust people!) You may not think you have the means to help but here are a few suggestions to change your behavior:
Give the change in your pocket (even if they are not begging--it's more humane!) (You might say you don't use cash...if you did you'd be less tracked!)
Offer to buy a coffee or give them yours (Food stamps doesn't cover hot food including coffee!)
Give the scarf, hat or jacket off your back (if it doesn't fit, they will have something for trade!)
If it's time to clean out your closet, then do so with someone in mind! Bring one or two items with you on your way to work and give them to a homeless person! Or if you have multiple items--donate to an organization that helps the homeless--NOT a thrift store!
