We are Homo sapiens sapiens. We were, maybe some of us still are Homo sapiens. Then there also existed Neanderthals who competed with Homo sapiens. We all interbreed. In fact, other variances of humans throughout time had to exist along with the next evolutionary step because we didn't change with the snap of finger! (All at the same time!)
(And there is Neanderthal DNA evidence provided with 23andme.com testing.--We interbred!)
If you look at the differences in the human species today you will realize there is quite a variance and we don't all resemble the archaeological specimen. (There had to be more variances.)
Today, seven feet tall people, four feet tall people, deformities such as giants and little people--but also there is the anomaly of the pygmy people in Central Africa. (Their gene pool has been isolated and small stature is prevalent. They are 35% shorter!)
One thing to think about regarding the pygmy peoples is --are they getting enough nutrition? Lack of nutrition can cause stunted growth. And with higher nutrition people can grow taller! I don't think they are neglecting their nutrition ingestion. I saw them prepare meat and I presume they eat vegetables /plants of the forest.
A study on Japanese people--their height and nutrition has been documented. (Japanese Standing Taller)
