Moses was born among the Hebrews in captivity in Egypt. Pharaoh had ordered all first born Hebrew males to be murdered. So Moses's mother put him in a basket and floated him among the reeds in the Nile River. Lo and behold, Pharaoh's daughter found him and raised him as her own. Moses grew up in the Egyptian court and watched as his fellow Hebrews were abused. One day he got fed up and reacted--he murdered an Egyptian abuser. He fled. He returned. He went to Pharaoh and demanded his people be set free! Ten times Moses demanded and ten times Pharaoh said no and ten plagues engulfed Egypt. The last plague was where the first born males in Egypt were taken from anyone who didn't paint lamb's blood on the post and lintels before nightfall when the Angel of the Lord would pass over the land!
After Pharaoh lost his first born, he gave up and let the Hebrews go...along with gold and other jewels from the Egyptians. The Hebrew flocks and herds went with them and they journeyed to the Red Sea. Where it was parted so the Hebrews could make it to the other side. In anger, Pharaoh went after the Hebrews and almost caught up to them at the Red Sea, but it was there that the Egyptians met their demise. God released the hold on the Red Sea and it collapsed on the Egyptians pursuing the Hebrews!
Moses and his people spent 40 years in the wilderness being guided by God. They drank from a rock and ate manna and quail in the wilderness...This journey is called the Exodus.
