Jacob's father (Abraham) gave him a coat of many colors. He was a dream interpreter and might has well been the favorite of his siblings. His siblings were jealous of the attention he got from their father so they devised a plan to be rid of Jacob. The put him in a pit where he would later be found by a trade caravan. They took him and traded him in Egypt. Pharaoh found Jacob very beneficial as a dream interpreter and made him second in command.
There was a drought throughout the lands and Joseph's family (his siblings, mind you) came to Egypt for trade and food. They didn't recognize Joseph in his Egyptian garb and hat--and they told him their business. Jacob took pity on his brethren and missed his father so. So he invited his family and brethren to bring their flocks and herds to dwell in the land of Egypt! This is how the Hebrews became enslaved in the land of Egypt for over 400 years.
