I know Europeans despise Americans for not knowing a foreign language when we travel--or at all. We do take it in school. However, it is in high ;and not in an earlier grade when our minds are supple and available to take in such ability!
In high school I took two years of Spanish. It was an average class of about 25 people, with little conversation we grasped the basics!
In community college I decided to take American Sign Language (ASL). Even though I don't remember much I think I would like to take a refresher course and get some of those basics back! One of our activities to do for the class was to visit a deaf restaurant located at Pike Place Market in down town Seattle. It wasn't really in the market, but right outside and nearby! I ordered using sign language as best I could and enjoyed my meal. It doesn't exist anymore...but I write this in hopes others will pop up!

At the University of Washington my ASL was not accepted as a transfer credit so I tried German! I did not last long, dropped and later enrolled in an intensive Spanish course for the summer before I graduated!
I use Spanglish today but my foreign language skills aren't good. I see Rosetta Stone in my future!
