America's Native Americans

Once upon a time the United States celebrated Columbus Day--for Christopher Columbus who "discovered" America. Now we now know Columbus did not discover America! There is proof of Vikings being in the State of Maine and Canada's Newfoundland before Columbus. Along the coastline of South America there was a sunken Chinese ship. (They were in the area long before Columbus!) And what about Native Americans: Don't they get the credit? I have written about the migration across the Alaskan Ice Age land bridge in so many words--but I also believe cro-magnon man was here before the Asian nomads!

Columbus Day is now celebrated as Indigenous Peoples' Day. Thank you for the recognition--but where is the celebration? Yes--the post office and banks were closed, but where is some attention, respect or awareness payed to Natives? How about funding Native American arts--movies and other TV programs besides the traditional arts? I, personally, would love some sort of cultural fair but I will leave that up to the tribes--can they get grant funding for such a celebration? A pow-wow or is that sacred and reserved?

This year, 2023, Idigenous Peoples' Day landed on October 9th. It was double labeled with the old holiday name. Please drop Columbus Day--its futile!
